Job nearly done

FAN power usually drives Mark Gilhaney on to do well.

Even when it comes from followers of the opposition.

The Dumbarton midfielder welcomed Saturday’s 1-0 win at home to Alloa on Saturday, which put Sons in a strong survival position.

After Garry Fleming put away the only goal of the game from the penalty spot, Mark could be seen pointing at someone – who he later revealed were hecklers in the crowd.

Mark scored Alloa’s consolation when they were beaten 3-1 by Sons on Saturday, October 17 2009.

That day, little did anyone know that it would be Dumbarton’s first of 15 games (and counting) unbeaten against the Wasps.

Mark said: “Their fans were giving me a bit of stick during the game so my celebration was just to give them something back.

“It’s a good result. That’s us nine points clear of Alloa and eight clear of Cowdenbeath, so we’re nearly safe.

“I think they felt quite unlucky not to get anything out of the game. They had a lot of chances and will probably feel they should have got at least a point.

“But it’s a good run to be on against them and hopefully we can carry it on even further next month.

“At this stage performances don’t really matter. It’s about getting the result and we’ll take that every day of the week.”

Now it’s on to the fixture where no-one would be given a chance. The next one faced by Hearts after a 10-0 victory.

Dumbarton are in the same crossfire as Cowdenbeath were two weeks ago, heading to Tynecastle as just about everyone’s underdogs.

However, after four points and two clean sheets, Mark is hopeful of a surprise result.

He added: “It’s going to be a hard game, as they are battering everyone right now.

“But if we keep it tight and try not to concede early doors, we have a chance. We’ll go there with a bit of confidence.

“They would need to have a real off day for us to get anything but it’s our last game against them before they go up.

“Despite our position we know we can’t rest on our laurels and we need to get more points to be absolutely certain.”
